SAN MATEO, Calif. - A man suspected of a brutal rape and attempted murder 32 years ago was arrested Wednesday after investigators used DNA evidence to link him to the crime, according to San Mateo police officials.
Officers arrested 55-year-old John Harris, Jr. in Manteca in San Joaquin County near his work and booked him into San Mateo County Jail on one charge of attempted premeditated murder and one charge of aggravated mayhem, both of which carry possible life sentences.

A 37-year-old man convicted of rape and other charges involving a woman he worked with on a construction cleanup crew at a hotel being built at San Francisco International Airport in 2019 has been sentenced to 18 years in state prison, San Mateo County prosecutors said Monday.
A jury in November found Pedro Galvan Martinez, a resident of Ripon in San Joaquin County, guilty of forcible rape with use of a deadly weapon, forcible oral copulation, false imprisonment and making criminal threats in connection with the attack on July 26, 2019.

Two former students filed a lawsuit against Millbrae School District and one of its middle schools Monday, alleging that a former teacher sexually assaulted and abused them and school officials failed to intervene.
The suit, filed in San Mateo County Superior Court, alleges that in 2013-2014 the teacher isolated the then-seventh grade girls in her classroom at Taylor Middle School to “inappropriately touch and grope intimate parts” of their bodies.
