The San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District (SMCISD) Board of Trustees collectively agreed to approve non-instructional professional contract renewals and superintendent performance evaluation at its May 3 school board agenda prep meeting.
The majority of the meetingâs discussions were held in closed sessions before moving on to a budget workshop to estimate the next school year s spending. The budget workshop was cut into five segments: Insurance and business projections, compression, salary scenarios, dates for public hearings for tax rates and budgeting and a final discussion.
Regarding insurance and benefits, the districtâs supplemental health care plans, such as vision and dental, will remain at the same rates. Stephanie Munoz, executive director of human resources, says gap insurance will be one of the few things to increase.

As part of its Rattler Reopening Plan, the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District (SMCISD) fully opened its campuses allowing students to return to in-person classes on April 12.
According to SMCISD Executive Director of Communications and Community Relations Andrew Fernandez, students returned to campus for the district s last six weeks to gain an understanding of what next fall will be like and so SMCISD staff could provide encouragement to students before the summer break. We know this has been a long year and a tough year for a lot of our students, a lot of our families, Fernandez says. We wanted to be able to provide resources to students, you know before they headed off to summer, and also just check on them, see how they re doing.â

San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District (SMCISD) parents brought attention to the district superintendent s response to a racial incident at Doris Miller Middle School during the district s April 19 school board meeting.
In January, SMCISD parent Tasha Fennell issued a complaint against the district after her daughter informed her about her teacher s response to when a student in the classroom said a racial slur. According to Fennell s complaint, another student told the student he could not say the slur in which their teacher responded by saying, If Black people can say it then white people can say it, too.
