DA s office hosting online presentations for Human Trafficking Awareness Month

–January 2021 is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and to assist the community to learn more about this tragic criminal enterprise, the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office and Cal Poly’s California Cybersecurity Institute have teamed up to offer free online presentations to the community on Jan. 19 & 20 from 11 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. each day. These presentations will bring a variety of local experts together to offer information on human trafficking as well as resources for victims and survivors. “Human Trafficking is modern-day slavery right here and we must do everything we can to eliminate it from our community,” said Dan Dow, District Attorney. “Our SLO County Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force is making a significant impact in reducing the occurrence in our county and I am grateful for the great partnerships we have. Please join our virtual forum to learn more.”

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office says it received a report of sexual battery Dec. 9 and a follow-up investigation by its special victim’s unit resulted in the arrest Dec. 14 of James Peter Thomas, 56. “Cal Fire administration was aware of the investigation and has cooperated fully with our efforts,” sheriff’s spokesperson Tony Cipolla told KSBY News. Cipolla says the sheriff’s office’s investigation is complete and the report has been submitted to the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office for review.

DUI driver convicted of manslaughter in fatal Nipomo crash December 15, 2020 By JOSH FRIEDMAN A Santa Maria man who drove the wrong way while intoxicated, causing a crash in Nipomo that killed an 82-year-old woman, managed to evade a second-degree murder conviction after a single juror held out from finding him guilty on Monday. The San Luis Obispo jury split 11-1 in favor of convicting Edgar Saul Rojas Morales, 25, of second-degree murder. The jury did, however, convict Morales of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and driving on a suspended license. Morales faces a possible sentence of 15 years to life in prison, because of prior convictions.

Santa Maria man convicted of manslaughter in Nipomo crash

A San Luis Obispo County jury on Monday convicted a Santa Maria man of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in the 2018 death of an 82-year-old woman in Nipomo. The jury handed down its verdict against Edgar Saul Rojas Morales, 25, in the killing of Maria Rosas Medina, also of Santa Maria, following a three-week trial in San Luis Obispo, according to Assistant District Attorney Eric Dobroth.  Morales also was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol, causing injury, a felony; and driving on a suspended license, a misdemeanor.  Jury members were not able to reach a verdict on the charge of murder, with 11 jurors finding Morales guilty and one juror finding him not guilty, according to Dobroth.

The jury deadlocked on the most serious charge of murder. According to the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney s Office, the jury was split 11-1 in favor of guilt.
