New variants may be cause of higher COVID cases in WNY | News, Sports, Jobs

gbacon@observertoday.com Officials believe the new COVID-19 variants may be the cause of the increase of deaths and positive cases in Western New York. From Friday to Sunday, the Chautauqua County Health Department reported 93 new coronavirus cases and two additional deaths. The two individuals who passed away were males. One was in his 60s and the other in his 80s. Overall, there have been 8,744 cases with 209 currently active and 8,391 recoveries. There has been 144 deaths linked to the virus locally. According to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Western New York has the highest positive percentage result in the state, at 4.78% over the last seven days. That said, Chautauqua County’s positivity rate is among the lowest in Western New York at 2.2%. Only Allegany has a lower seven day rate at 1.8%. Neighboring Cattaraugus County’s seven day rate is 4.4% while Erie County’s is even higher at 5.3%.

The Health Department celebrated its staff and partners on Wednesday at its mass vaccination clinic at the State University of New York at Fredonia. Commendations were made and balloons released in celebration of county-run vaccinations sites administering 25,111 doses by the end of the day on Friday.

Westfield Annual Ox Roast Gets Canceled Again | News, Sports, Jobs

Apr 15, 2021 WESTFIELD For the second consecutive year, a staple event in Westfield has been canceled due to the pandemic. William Bills, chairman of Westfield’s annual Ox Roast, announced this year’s event which was scheduled for Sunday, July 11, will not be held. “Due to the various COVID restrictions and requirements currently in effect we will not be able to host the Westfield Ox Roast in 2021,” Bills said. Bills said the committee overseeing the Ox Roast made the difficult decision to cancel the event after on-going discussions with Chautauqua County Health Department representatives. Participants would need to be tested for COVID, and anyone attending would be required to show proof of a negative test.
