MAYVILLE It appears fire training foam used near the former Mayville school in the last decade may have infected the village water supply.
William T. Boria attended the Mayville Village Board meeting Tuesday to give an update on the village’s water system. The specialist with the Chautauqua County Health Department has been working with the Department of Environmental Conservation how perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) was discovered in three of the village’s water wells.

Spraying Foam in Fire Training Excercises the Likely Cause of PFNA in Mayville Water Supply

Chautauqua County Health Department reported to the village board this week that a state investigation says the fire training foam that was used near the former Mayville school between 2014 and 2018 appears to have leached into the village water supply, resulting in the high levels of perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) being discovered in three of the village’s water wells.
The discovery led to a do-not-drink advisory being issued for two weeks in December.
Boria said that lab testing on animals has shown that high doses of PFNA has caused adverse effects on the liver, thyroid, and immune system, and also contributes to high blood pressure and high cholesterol. There’s also some evidence that it delays growth and development.
WESTFIELD Slowly, but surely Westfield-area residents and front-liners are receiving vaccinations.
Westfield Memorial Hospital said Tuesday it is planning to hold several COVID-19 vaccine clinics this week and next week. Clinics are held from 1 to 3 p.m. To date, the hospital has vaccinated approximately 260 local health-care workers and seniors over 65.
The clinic was scheduled as a result of the hospital receiving 200 additional first doses of vaccine, according to hospital President Karen Surkala.
Future clinics, utilizing additional doses of vaccine, are scheduled for Tuesday and Feb. 17. To schedule, qualified patients should check AHN.org, where Westfield Memorial Hospital will be providing a scheduling link for individuals to sign up later this week.
