editorial@observertoday.com The Chautauqua County Health Department reported one of its lowest totals in new COVID cases in recent memory Wednesday morning with 37. To date there have been 6,822 confirmed cases, with 339 currently considered active. No new virus-related deaths were recorded and remain at 111 during the pandemic, while the number of people with COVID in the hospital was at 38 and 1,869 in quarantine. Of the new cases reported, which is from data collected Tuesday, two come from the Dunkirk zip code, nine in Fredonia, nine in Jamestown and three each in Dewittville and Lakewood. The number of people vaccinated has increased within the county. As of Jan. 30, 8,693 people had received their first dose representing about 6.7% of the population while 1,672 have received their second dose.

Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas is hopeful another COVID-19 vaccination clinic will be coming to Dunkirk. Last week, the mayor said, the most recent clinic in the city was held at the Senior Center. “I’d been communicating with (the Chautauqua County Health Department) and on (Jan. 18) they said they were trying to get one in Dunkirk, but they could not confirm to me that they would have it or when they would have it,” he said. “They said that they would have one, but they didn’t know when. Well it turns out they were able to bring it and they brought it that Thursday (Jan. 21); and they did a little over 250 vaccinations here at our senior center.”

County Reports Four New Deaths, 182 New Cases for Friday, Saturday and Sunday MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua County Health Department says there were four new COVID-19-related deaths in the county for over the weekend. As a result, the overall number of COVID-19 related deaths is now at 107. According to the county health department’s COVID-19 dashboard that was updated Monday, there were also 182 new COVID 19 cases for the three days covering Friday, Saturday and Sunday. As of Sunday, there were 401 active cases – eight fewer than what was reported for Thursday. There were also 35 hospitalizations for Sunday, the same total that was reported for Thursday. Also, the 7-day test positivity rate continues to decline and is now at 5.7%.

Health Department Reports 61 New COVID Cases, No Deaths Reported for Thursday, Jan. 28 MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua County Health Department says there were no new COVID-19 related deaths for Thursday, and the number of known active cases in the county was basically unchanged from the previous day. According to the  county health department’s COVID-19 dashboard – last updated Friday afternoon – there were 61 new COVID 19 cases for Thursday and the total number of Active cases was at 409 – one less than what was reported on Wednesday. There were also 35 hospitalizations on Thursday, three fewer than what was reported the day earlier. And there remains 103 total deaths since the pandemic first began.

County Reports Six New COVID-19-Related Deaths for Wednesday, Jan. 27 MAYVILLE – The number of According to the Chautauqua County Health Department’s COVID-19 dashboard, there were 6 new COVID-19 related deaths reported for Wednesday, bringing the overall total to 103.That’s more than a 200% increase in the number of deaths since the end of December – when the total was at 32. Meanwhile, the county also reported 102 new COVID 19 cases for Wednesday and the total number of Active cases was at 410 – 14 more than what was reported on Tuesday. There were also 38 hospitalizations, the same number as Tuesday. And the 7-day test positivity rate for Wednesday was at 7.4%, a 0.2% increase from Tuesday.
