COVID deaths spike after county update | News, Sports, Jobs

gbacon@observertoday.com Before Thursday, Chautauqua County’s Health Department had been under-reporting the number of deaths tied to COVID-19 through no fault of their own. In its daily update Friday, the county noted that 75 people have died due to complications associated with the virus, adding 23 to the total. “Sadly, deaths from COVID-19 reported today are 23,” the department reported. “These county residents have died over the last few weeks in long term care facilities. COVID-19 cases in long term care facilities are monitored and managed by the New York State Department of Health. Deaths in long term care facilities and hospitals must be reported to the state, not to the county Health Department. Statistics and information is as updated and accurate as possible, based on the information available to us and provided to us.”

JPS Looking To Hold Its Own Vaccine Clinic | News, Sports, Jobs

jwhittaker@post-journal.com The Jamestown Public Schools District is taking matters into its own hands to get school staff members a COVID-19 vaccination. Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently announced that teachers, police, firefighters, public transit workers and other first responders can now get vaccinated, along with people age 65 or older, making more than 3 million people in the state eligible. The state is only getting about 300,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine a week, leading to long waits to get eligible people vaccinated. There are two ways right now to schedule a vaccine. One is to visit the state’s Am I Eligible website at am-i-eligible.covid19vaccine.health.ny.gov or the Chautauqua County Health Department’s signup site for local clinics at chqgov.com/public-health/covid-19-vaccination-clinics.
