Health Officials Report 99 New Cases for Thursday, Dec. 17 MAYVILLE – The COVID-19 reported across the county for Thursday, Dec. 17. According to the Chautauqua County Health Department’s COVID-19 dashboard, which was updated Friday afternoon, the total number of known Active Cases as of Thursday was 433. That’s 48 more active cases than what was reported for Wednesday. There were also 31 people hospitalized in the county who’ve tested positive for COVID-19, that’s three fewer than what was reported just a day earlier. And the 7-day average positive test rate for the entire county was 7.8% – down 1 percent from Tuesday. Of the 99 new cases for Wednesday, 41 were out of Jamestown, which now has 123 known active cases – 27 more than what was reported on Wednesday.

churst@post-journal.com After peaking at 9% on Wednesday, Chautauqua County saw a slight drop in COVID-19 positivity rate on Thursday even as it reported 71 new cases and a 25th virus-related fatality. In addition to the cases, The county Department of Health reported a seven-day positivity rate of 8.8% on Thursday. Meanwhile, 34 people are hospitalized with the virus a drop of two from information released on Wednesday. The fatality, the second recorded in as many days, appears to be an individual in their 80s, according to a breakdown of deaths by age demographic released by the county. Of the 90 residents between the ages of 80 and 89 to have been diagnosed with the virus, nine have passed away a 10% fatality rate and the largest of any age demographic in the county.

The Chautauqua County Health Department is reporting progress in the Mayville water health emergency. Last week, the health department issued a “Do not drink” order for residents who get their water from the Maville water system, including village residents and Chautauqua town residents who use the village’s system. According to Christine Schuyler, county public health director and commissioner of Social Services, a new well was put into service Monday and is currently pumping clean water into the system. “The water has been tested, it’s free of contaminants and it’s free of bacteria. It’s being chlorinated according to state regulations,” she said Wednesday during a Facebook update.

County to offer COVID testing in Dunkirk, Jamestown | News, Sports, Jobs

OBSERVER File Photo The Chautauqua County Health Department announced that free COVID-19 testing will be provided in Dunkirk and Jamestown over the next two weeks. Testing will take place at the Murphy Training Center, 665 Brigham Road, Dunkirk, on Tuesday, Dec. 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and on Tuesday, Dec. 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. In Jamestown, testing will take place at the Taylor Training Center, 240 Harrison St. on Wednesday, Dec. 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesday, Dec. 30, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. COVID-19 testing is free and available for Chautauqua County residents. “We encourage individuals who have been exposed and/or those who have symptoms to schedule an appointment,” the county said in a news release.
