County Legislature Fails to Act on Appointment Democratic Election Commissioner
MAYVILLE – The
Board of Elections last night.
County lawmakers opted not to act on the recommendation from the
County Democratic Committee’s Executive Committee to reappoint
Norman Green as election commission. As a result, the full County Democratic Committee will have to meet and find a new recommendation to bring before the legislature.
In the meantime, Green will remain at his post until a new recommendation comes forward and is acted on by the legislature.
In October, the county democratic committee recommended Assistant Democratic Election Commission
Luz Torres be appointed to replace the Green. However, the legislature pulled that recommendation from its October agenda after learning some members of the Democratic Party felt not all committee members were able to participate in the

There are 16 prefiled resolutions for Wednesday’s Chautauqua County Legislature meeting. None of them deal with who will be the Democratic election commissioner for 2021.
Norm Green is both the Democratic election commissioner and the chairman of the county Democratic Committee. In 2020, Green announced he was going to retire at the end of the year. He personally backed Luz Torres, his current deputy election commissioner, to take his place. County Democrats elected Torres in October, but that same month, the county Legislature refused to vote on Torres’ appointment.
Because a vote was never held, her appointment nomination expired. To replace her, the county Democratic Executive Committee backed Green to return as the election commissioner. A certification of the appointment was sent to the full legislature and was received on Jan. 4.

Even the smaller of two state budgets proposed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo is good news for the Jamestown Public Schools District.
On Tuesday, Cuomo proposed two state budgets one which uses $6 billion in aid from the federal government and one with $15 billion aid from the federal government. From a practical standpoint, Cuomo’s proposed budget only assumes the $6 billion in federal aid. In order to cover the rest of the $9 billion state budget shortfall, Cuomo said New York will need to borrow, raise taxes and slash state spending for local governments and social services. He said New York would spend $600 million less on Medicaid and continue $900 million in 5% across-the-board spending reductions.
The Roberts Road Freezer project may be expanding.
During the Chautauqua County Legislature’s Public Facilities Committee meeting this week, members agreed to modify a resolution that would allow the company to purchase another 7.5 acres of land.
In 2018, Roberts Road Freezer, LLC purchased about 10 acres of land from the county to build a 100,000 foot freezer. The company, which was at time was doing business with Fieldbrook Foods, left an option open for them to purchase another three parcels of land for $1 in the next six years. After six years, the county would be free to market that property, however Roberts Road Freezer could match if it so chose.
