WHEN Warrington Wolves and Castleford Tigers square up in Saturday’s Challenge Cup semi-final at Leigh Sports Village, the stakes feel much higher than in the competition’s recent past. Nothing lifts a town’s mood like its premier sports team contesting a cup final at Wembley, as has happened six times in the past 12 years. But with the dark times we’ve been through with the coronavirus pandemic, now would be a better time than ever to get swallowed up by Warrington Wolves Challenge Cup fever. Whether it be through going to Wembley to experience the showpiece event live, or watching on TV at home, the occasion and the six weeks of tantalising build-up would be a welcome distraction in a period when we’re all hoping to be able to continue finding the new ‘normal’ in our lives.

Barton, or its full name Barton-on-Irwell, is an area of Salford in Greater Manchester. It is home to City Airport, which is used by commercial and private pilots as well as police and air ambulance helicopters. The area is home to rugby union side Sale Sharks and rugby league team Salford Red Devils, who play at the 12,000 capacity AJ Bell Stadium.

TEN, NINE, EIGHT… The countdown to the reopening of hotels is nearing zero and staff at the Beetham Tower’s Hilton Hotel have been getting a little excited. Since last Friday, they have been darting between bedrooms turning lights on and off to remind the people of Manchester just how long they have to wait before they are able to sleep in a bed that isn’t theirs again. Cynics might lambast the Hilton for its
laissez faire attitude towards energy consumption but considering hotels have been closed for most of the past 14 months, I think we can let them off.
