9th Circuit Limits Police Right to Use Force
The left-wing 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that police can only use force “proportional” to the threat they face as mandated by Seattle under the Obama federal mandates. This seriously damages the Seattle Police Department’s ability to use firearms.
“The City of Seattle has a significant interest in regulating the use of department-issued firearms by its police officers, and the [Use of Force] Policy does not impose a substantial burden on the Second Amendment right to use a firearm for the core lawful purpose of self-defense,” District Judge William Hayes wrote on behalf of a three-judge panel that presided the court case Mahoney vs. City of Seattle.

Nearly a year has passed since the May 25, 2020, killing of George Floyd, an anniversary that brings with it the informal deadline among Democrats for police reform. Despite having all that time to put together and pass a police reform package, the fate of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a second version of which passed the House in March and stalled in the Senate, remains as muddled as ever. In late March, 13-year-old Adam Toledo was fatally shot by Chicago police officers at the end of a foot chase. Police said body camera footage shows Toledo holding a gun in his right hand, but it vanishes from sight as he turns toward the officer and begins to raise his hands as he's shot. A gun was later found behind a fence a few feet from where Toledo was killed.

Tensions are running high between some University of Minnesota students and campus police. But student activists have made a number of unreasonable demands while the focus should be on better student-police cooperation and improved public safety.
In a letter to administrators last month, student government leaders demanded that U Police Chief Matthew Clark resign. They argue that as a former Minneapolis police officer, his embrace of MPD culture has caused the “traumatization we see in our local marginalized communities … and having a police chief . from that department is only making our community less safe and inclusive.” Several dozen students and about a dozen faculty signed the letter.
