Lockdown reprieve for customs clearing agents Thupeyo Muleya Beitbridge Bureau Government has revised lockdown regulations and classified customs clearing agents and freight forwarders operating inland and at the country’s ports of entry/exit as essential service providers in a move set to enhance regional and international trade facilitation. Prior to the latest move, some freight forwarders had resorted to closing shop as early as 3pm to avoid confrontation with security agencies since there was no clear position regarding their operations. As a result, the availability of a thin staff of the customs agents had started to affect the movement of cargo across the borders.

JUST IN: Lockdown extension gazetted Bulawayo Bureau Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, who is also the Minister of Health and Child Care, has gazetted the extension of the Level Four national lockdown by a further two weeks. This gives effect to the address by President Mnangagwa on Monday in which he announced the extension of the lockdown as a means of combating Covid-19 in the country. The new measures are contained in Statutory Instrument 42 of 2021 published yesterday by VP Chiwenga. According to Section 2 (a) of SI 42 of 2021, the Level Four national lockdown will be in force until March 1, 2021. The SI also extended opening times for businesses and industries allowed to operate from between 8AM and 3pm to between 8am and 5pm.

Tighter Lockdown Measures Gazetted The lockdown amendment order moving Zimbabwe from Level Two national lockdown back to a Level 4 for 30 days, with a few additions suspending permission for church services and other gatherings, was gazetted on Saturday. The main effect of the amendment gazetted by Minister of Health and Child Care Vice President Constantino Chiwenga as Statutory Instrument 10 of 2021, Public Health (Covid-19 Prevention, Containment and Treatment) (National Lockdown) (No. 2) (Amendment) Order, 2021 (No. 9), prohibits most public gatherings of more than two people and closes most of the commercial and informal sectors except for supermarkets and pharmacies. The productive sectors of agriculture, mining and manufacturing can remain open.
