Durham s Can Opener Bridge Defeated Dozens of Ambitious Truck Drivers Last Year

Durham’s ‘Can Opener’ Bridge Defeated Dozens of Ambitious Truck Drivers Last Year Stills from six of the 162 videos from 11foot8.com. The stoplight is red and the “OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN” sign flashes urgently as a semi-truck waits at the intersection. The driver has a moment to consider turning before impact with the railroad bridge above Gregson Street. Instead they keep going and approach the bridge at a crawl, hesitate, then charge on. Wrong move.  The crash on November 13, 2020, was just one of more than 160 recorded in this very spot, the scars etched onto the bridge’s protective beam. The beam is the real foe, unmoving and unforgiving. Its scratches are an inventory of human error, of man versus metal (man losing).

DARPA Project Drives Simulation Technology for Off-Road Unmanned Vehicles

DARPA Project Drives Simulation Technology for Off-Road Unmanned Vehicles Our Bureau 1409 Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)’s Robotic Autonomy in Complex Environments with Resiliency - Simulation (RACER-Sim) project is seeking innovations in technologies that bridge the gap from simulation to the real world and significantly reduce the cost of off-road autonomy development. DARPA invites proposals for promising solutions that support these goals. While the past decade has seen increased use of simulation in developing field robotics, the military off-road environment is especially challenging and complex. Computers need to re-create three-dimensional surfaces, compliant soils and vegetation, and hundreds of obstacle classes. Software also needs to take into account lower fidelity or limited mapping data, unique platform-surface interactions, continuous motion planning, and no defined road networks or driving rules. In addition, modeling high speed off-road pe

How Indigenous-led childcare centres could help close Australia s education gap

How Indigenous-led childcare centres could help close Australia s education gap Posted WedWednesday 16 updated ThuThursday 17 DecDecember 2020 at 2:23am Experts say early childhood education centres led by First Nations people can help kids get the best start in life. ( Share Print text only When Wayne Griffiths first went to primary school, it was a terrifying experience. I grew up in a little town called Curlewis [in northern NSW], and my first day at school was so traumatic I cried most of the morning and eventually I had to be taken home by my eldest brother, he recalls. That was the case most of the days that week. I didn t know what school was, I didn t have access to any early childhood settings, and it was just horrific for me.
