The digital divide is a phrase heard often these days, referring to an infrastructure gap between those with computer and internet access and those without. This concept has not only been illuminated, but exacerbated, during the COVID-19 pandemic when nearly every aspect of our lives is remote out of public health necessity.
A year ago, in April 2020, the Pew Research Center found that 53% of Americans deemed the internet essential during the COVID-19 outbreak in no small part due to the fact schooling became entirely virtual. While a majority might recognize this technology as vital, an unfortunate truth is that Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) surveys indicated that 90% of its K-12 students lacked an appropriate device and adequate internet service when polled as classes went remote.

On March 4, the Dawsonville Lions Club donated $2000 to the Good Shepherd Clinic of Dawson County.
In a presentation on March 4, Lions Club Treasurer Martha Holbrook, Secretary Jim Buckley and Lions Tail Twister Richard DeNell gave the donation to Good Shepherd Clinic Executive Director Kay Parrish and Volunteer Coordinator Joe Fortune.
Dawsonville Lions Charities Inc. is a nonprofit organization that supports financial contributions and referrals for those in need to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse for free eye exams, eyeglasses, more serious eye care and free hearing aid help.

Detroit Lions Charities, an extension of the Detroit Lions organization which distributes grants to Detroit and Michigan nonprofits, supports transformational efforts in underserved communities by working to create long-lasting impact through meaningful partnerships. Throughout the year, the Detroit Lions work to raise awareness and funding for these organizations, prioritizing critical needs in the community, with an emphasis on youth development, access and opportunity and social justice initiatives in Detroit.
After a year in which many nonprofits were stretched to their thinnest, Detroit Lions Charities has identified their partners for 2021, each one with platforms closely aligned with the organization s mission and values, as well as vision for a stronger, healthier region.
