Arbitration heavy-hitter Gearing to join Fountain Court Chambers instead of Essex Court

Matthew Gearing QC, a former co-head of Allen & Overy’s global arbitration group, and a former chair of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), is set to join Fountain Court Chambers on May 3. In January, the UK’s Essex Court Chambers had announced that Gearing would be joining it. However, since then, Essex Court was sanctioned by the Chinese government over a Jan. 26 legal opinion penned by the four members of the chambers on the treatment of the Uyghur Muslim minority in Xinjiang. Gearing is presently at Allen & Overy, where he spent more than two decades, becoming a partner in 2005. He took Silk in 2014.

Singapore: ZICO Insights Law launches disputes practice with new hire

ZICO Insights Law, the ZICO Law network’s Singapore firm, has established a disputes practice after hired Cheryl Ng as a director. Ng previous managed her own disputes practice at boutique Intelleigen Legal. Ng has represented clients in multi-million dollar Singapore International Arbitration Centre arbitrations as well as cross-border disputes in Asia and Europe. She also advises on white-collar criminal matters, as well as employment issues and intellectual property disputes. Ng previously worked at law firms Amarick Gill and MG Chambers. For cases requiring more specialised expertise, ZICO Insights Law will be working with Tham Lijing of Essex Court Chambers Duxton (Singapore Group Practice). Tham will act as the firm’s external counsel in litigation and arbitration.
