Dumka: A group of coal thieves attacked a team of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), injuring two jawans, at an abandoned coal mine of the Chitra-based Eastern Coalmine Limited (ECL) in Sultanpur under Nala police station of Jamtara district on Friday night.
Jamtara SP Deepak Kumar on Saturday said the incident happened when the CISF team was making a surprise raid against stealing of coal. He, however, said the team went to the site without informing the local police.
Kumar said, “The CISF authorities should have taken the local police into confidence before venturing into the abandoned coal mine unit which is surrounded by a large population comprising mainly those involved in coal pilferage.” The SP also said the practice of stealing coal from closed ECL units was a common phenomenon.
