While Houston ISD recently recognized 12 finalists as candidates to be named its 2020-21 elementary and secondary teachers of the year, local schools also named their Teachers of the Year this spring.
The Leader solicited responses from the top teachers at area schools. Additional responses will be featured in a later issue.

Duong said he was honored to receive the Teacher of the Year award.
âIt shows that dedication is recognized, not just from me, but every teacher,â he said. âUnder such unprecedented times, a single teacher such as myself cannot achieve success alone, but through the help and collaboration of my colleagues. I am appreciative and proud to accept the award on the behalf of all educators.â
Mitchell Montalvo, a former Heights resident who attended Sinclair Elementary, will soon be a lieutenant in the Air Force ROTC at the University of Houston. Montalvo also is one of two UH students who will be the first at the school to enter the United States Space Force (USSF).
Montalvo comes from a military family. His father was a military police officer in the Army. His sister attended the Air Force Academy and was an officer in the Air Force. His brother was also in the Air Force.
âMy family is thrilled,â Montalvo said. âMy wife has been a huge support, too.â
