Coronavirus update: Chippewa County reaches 1,000 cases

As of Wednesday, data from the State of Michigan reported there have been 1,017 cumulative confirmed cases and 1,336 cumulative probables of COVID-19 in Chippewa County.
There have been 32 deaths because of the virus. On Wednesday, it was reported by the Chippewa County Health Department that 1,995 people have recovered.
Compared to last week’s totals, there had been 989 confirmed cases, 1,308 probable cases and 32 deaths due to COVID-19 in Chippewa County. Per the health department, there had been 1,861 people who recovered from the virus.

Area hiking trails being prepped for use this summer

The Outdoor Use of Trails House Consortium is working to prepare area trails for use this summer for tourists and residents to observe the great outdoors.
The OUT House Consortium, a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization, was created with the intent of focusing on trail development, maintenance and promotion, whether it be hiking, biking or water trails. It works closely with government agencies, other nonprofit agencies, private citizens and business owners to establish a network of trails for non-motorized recreational transit in the Eastern Upper Peninsula.
“Our mission doesn t exclude any trail,” said Julie Ann Timmer, a board member of the OUT House Consortium. “We wish to help create, promote and maintain all non-motorized trails in the EUP. Sault Middle School reverts to online learning through Friday
SAULT STE. MARIE Sault Area Middle School has moved to online Google Classroom instruction through Friday.
This decision was the result of a recent outbreak of COVID-19 positive students at the middle school and the resulting number of quarantined students. On Friday, the district was made aware of two positive cases at the middle school and Lincoln Elementary School. On Monday, three more cases were identified at the middle school.
Students are expected to report to their regularly scheduled Google Classrooms during their normal school schedules. Links to their virtual classes will be posted on their teachers Google Classroom sites.
CCHD follows guidance, pauses J&J vaccinations

The Chippewa County Health Department has paused the use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine until further notice.
A joint statement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration early last week announced that out of the 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccines that have been administered in the country, six cases of a rare but severe type of blood clot were reported in individuals after receiving the vaccine. All reports occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48, and symptoms occurred six to 13 days after vaccination. As a result, the health organizations recommended a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution.
