COVID-19 NEWS: Simcoe Muskoka residents 40+ can now book COVID-19 vaccines

  BARRIE, ONT. Simcoe Muskoka residents 40 or older can book a COVID-19 vaccine anywhere in the province starting Thursday. On Tuesday, people with at-risk health conditions and more people who can t work from home became eligible to book their vaccinations. The government said Wednesday that half of the province s adults have now received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and are aiming to have 65 per cent of adults vaccinated with a first shot by the end of May. The province also said Wednesday it is developing a plan to vaccinate children aged 12 to 17 starting in June and expects to share more details in the coming weeks.

Four new cases, two recoveries in Muskoka on Thursday

Four new cases of COVID-19 and two recoveries were reported in the District of Muskoka today(Thursday). The local health unit added two cases, a male and a female both 18 to 34 years old and one recovery in Muskoka Lakes. One case, a female minor, was reported in Bracebridge, and one case and one recovery were added in Gravenhurst. In addition, one active case was reassigned from Georgian Bay to Muskoka Lakes. 64 cases are now active in our district, 18 in Bracebridge, 13 in Huntsville, four in Lake of Bays, 21 in Muskoka lakes, seven in Gravenhurst and one in Georgian Bay. In the last 24 hours, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit gave out over 600 first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine to residents in Muskoka.

The Simcoe Muskoka health unit logged 40 new COVID-19 infections Tuesday, plus one virus-related death. So far, in May, six Simcoe County residents have lost their lives after contracting the disease. The region s medical officer of health said roughly 50 per cent of Tuesday s reported cases are among residents under the age of 35. As infection rates drop across the region, there has been an increase in variants of concern. The health unit reports cases of the P.1 strain, originally from Brazil, jumped from 22 two weeks ago to 76. There are 17 confirmed cases of the B.1.351 mutation, originally from South Africa.

Three new community gardens coming to Barrie

  BARRIE, ONT. Three parks in Barrie will be getting new community gardens this summer. Two gardens will be installed in the north end at Lampman Lane Park and Riverwood Park. The third will be constructed at Batteaux Park in the Ardagh Bluffs area. The City of Barrie, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit and Urban Pantry explored new locations for the community gardens and approved the sites after consultation with residents. The Urban Pantry will be running the installation of the gardens and construction updates will be posted on the city s website. The decision to put a garden at Riverwood Park means the current Sunnidale Park location will be closed and transferred to Riverwood.
