Best albums of 2020 made by Arizona artists, ranked Ed Masley, Arizona Republic
Arizona artists had a harder time connecting with their local fans in 2020. Music venues shut down in early March in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and remained shuttered, for the most part, through December.
Some artists did their best to stay connected via livestream, which was nice.
But just because you couldn t see your favorite Arizona artists in your favorite Arizona bars the way you did in pre-pandemic times, that doesn t mean you couldn t stay connected to their music through recordings.
And 2020 was a great year to experience new music made by Arizona artists. These were the best we had a chance to hear, from Maynard James Keenan s latest dispatch from Jerome to internationally recognized releases from Spirit Adrift and Phoenix native Courtney Marie Andrews.

The Arizona singer-songwriter, who released her latest album ‘Old Flowers’ in July, recorded the song earlier this year alongside Liz Cooper and Molly Sarlé.
The delicate, acoustic take on the 1965 track appeared on the star-studded ‘…Collapse Of American Democracy’ compilation in aid Voting Rights Lab, who campaign for fair voting rights in the US.

Also featuring the likes of Pearl Jam, David Byrne and Arcade Fire, the collection was previously only available via Bandcamp for a 24-hour period in October.
Speaking of her contribution, Andrews described Simon & Garfunkel’s classic song as “a beautiful novella of a certain place in time that stirs our emotions”.

Courtney Marie Andrews’ new cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “America,” performed with fellow artists Liz Cooper and Molly Sarlé, is out today. Listen/share HERE. Andrews, Cooper and Sarlé originally recorded the song as a contribution to Good Music to Avert the Collapse of American Democracy Vol. 2 a special compilation album released earlier this fall with proceeds benefitting Voting Rights Lab, a non-partisan organization fighting for fair voting rights.
Of the collaboration, Andrews shares, “This song is a beautiful novella of a certain place in time that stirs our emotions. While we were all at a writer’s retreat, we decided to sing harmony on it, to bring us closer together and reminisce over that free feeling of travel and love.”
