Over 5,000 students from 438 institutions across the country applied to be nominated, and 1,256 went on to be nominated for the award, according to the foundation’s website.
Selected students must study natural science, engineering or mathematics. Of those nominated, 409 students received the $7,500 award, according to the website.
India Dykes, junior bioengineering major, spent months working on the application, and was excited when she found out she won.
“I felt like it was really validating to have my research recognized since I’ve worked on it for the last two years,” she said.

Over 5,000 college students from across the United States were nominated for the scholarships, from which only 410 recipients were selected based on academic merit.
The Goldwater scholarships have been conferred since 1989 by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. These scholarships have supported undergraduates who go on to become leading scientists, engineers, and mathematicians in their respective fields. All of the 2021-22 Goldwater Scholars intend to obtain a doctorate in their area of research, including the four MIT recipients.
2021 Barry Goldwater Scholar
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to serve as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater. The Scholarships are reserved for college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering.
A total of 410 college students from across the United States were selected for scholarships from a pool of 1,256 applicants from 438 academic institutions.
“The Etown Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry encouraged me to begin research within my first year, allowing me to get a head start on developing crucial techniques through one-on-one training with professors,” said Talbott. “This dedication and continuous support enabled me to become a better scientist and person.”
