Roanoke County law enforcement holds Special Olympics Virginia Annual Torch Run event
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – Local law enforcement members are hitting the pavement and lighting the way with an annual tradition.
On Wednesday, the Roanoke County Sheriff’s Office took part in the Torch Run for Special Olympics Virginia.
Each year, agencies from across the state run, walk and bike a total of 22,000 miles, raising thousands of dollars over the 8-day period.
“It means a lot to us and Special Olympics, to keep officers motivated and raising money, that sort of thing. Just encouraging athletes to get back on the field by us getting back out there,” said Scott Young with the Roanoke County Sheriff’s Office.

Special Olympics Torch Run returns to Bozeman to kick off summer games

BOZEMAN â On Thursday afternoon, Special Olympics Montana and local law enforcement from Bozeman ran down main street kicking off the 2021 Summer Games with their infamous torch run.
âItâs really nice to do the torch run again, said Bozeman junior athlete Jamie Taylor. Last year it was rough with COVID. It was great going back into it again.â
Business owners, citizens and many students from Bozeman High came to show their support.
âIt was incredible to see how much support there was, said Bozeman chief of police Jim Veltkamp. I honestly had no idea there was going to be that many citizens, business owners and students out on the sidewalk. Coming past and seeing everybody supporting the athletes, having their signs out, that made everything extra special.â
