9 July, 2021, 4:45 pm The Ministry of Education fired and referred a staff member to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) in 2019 after he received $20,000 from a donor without issuing a receipt, states the Auditor-General’s 2019 report on the Social Services Sector that was tabled in Parliament in June. The Office of the Auditor-General said an official government receipt must be issued for all monies received. “The ministry received on 28/11/2018 a donation of $F20,000 from an embassy to fund the Special Education Program,” said the OAG. “There was no receipt issued to the donor for funds received. “On 11/02/19, an accountable advance for $20,000 was issued to a staff of the ministry. And on 18/02/19, revenue receipt No. 904124 of the same amount was issued by the ministry’s cashier to the same officer for clearance of accountable advance. No other supporting document was produced as acquittal.”

Gila County set to destroy special education records

The Gila County School Superintendent’s Office will destroy special education student records for the Gila County Regional School District #49. This includes students that were enrolled in the Special Education Program at Globe Education Center, Payson Education Center or BiyaaGozhoo Education Center. Records scheduled for destruction are for special education students enrolled at one of these locations who were born in 1997 and 1998. Anyone wishing to get records should contact the Gila County School Superintendent’s Office at 928-402-8784 before June 30.

Hinton receives AGATE Curriculum Award for gifted and talented education unit

News No Comments A UA Little Rock student has been honored for her work in creating an exceptional curriculum unit for gifted and talented education. Krista Hinton, a graduate student in gifted and talented education at UA Little Rock as well as the K-12 gifted and talented coordinator for Lavaca School District, received an AGATE Curriculum Award. The AGATE Curriculum Award highlights the importance of differentiated curriculum and recognizes outstanding curriculum units. An award of $500 is presented to the educator’s gifted and talented program. “The AGATE Curriculum Award, to me, is the pinnacle of academic achievement,” Hinton said. “To be recognized on a state level for an original unit is an honor that very few teachers have the privilege to experience. The award will always hold a special place in my heart.”

As two parents with high-school and college-age children who are doing some type of online learning, we have heard the refrains of, “Online education is not as good as face-to-face, students just don’t learn as much,” “their teachers don’t engage with them” and “kids are teaching themselves.” And as parents, we understand. We want to make sure our kids are getting the best education possible. But as higher-education instructors who have taught for a total of more than 30 years in both face-to-face and online classrooms, we can offer insights to help address these common concerns.
