Covington City Council has chosen the companies that will create a master plan for Central Park and recommend ways to improve downtown parking and traffic. It also voted Monday, Feb. 15, to select a company to rebuild a former wooden trestle railroad bridge near Covington City Hall for use as part of the Cricket Frog Trail.

Dates to know for the March SPLOST VII special election Local voters will soon decide the fate of the seventh installment of Dawson County’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax SPLOST VII.  With approved project lists from both the Dawson County Government and the city of Dawsonville, but no intergovernmental agreement between the two parties, the $60 million, 6-year penny sales tax continuation will go before voters in a specially called election on March 16, 2021.   According to Dawson County Board of Elections Director Glenda Ferguson, early voting for the special election will begin on Monday, Feb. 22, 2021, and will last until Friday, March 12. Local voters can vote early at the Dawson County Board of Elections office, 96 Academy Avenue in Dawsonville, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

McCollar to assess ‘State of City’ amid Tuesday council sessions Mayor Jonathan McCollar Mayor Jonathan McCollar plans to give his 2021 State of the City speech Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the usual time of the month’s second regular Statesboro City Council meeting. That meeting – with steps toward major improvements to two parks and a preliminary vote on a property maintenance code on the agenda – will then follow the mayor’s speech. The after-5:30 p.m. regular session will conclude a series of three public meetings in the City Hall council chambers set to start with a work session on multiple topics  at 3 p.m.

Art will punctuate the new look of Clayton Street in downtown Athens Two years after the East Clayton Street Improvements Project was approved, work continues on the transformation of downtown Athens. Trees were recently removed and trenches dug along the street for new utilities. In the end, the street will be repaved and changed to two lanes; new trees will be planted; and new parking meters installed. Last week, the Athens-Clarke County Commission heard an update from the man who will blend artwork into the streetscape project. Eric Leshinsky, an artist and city planner from Annapolis, Md., was chosen by the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission to merge art into a project that covers three blocks of Clayton from Thomas to Lumpkin streets.

The Newton County Board of Commissioners recently approved the use of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds for construction of a skateboard park in Denny Dobbs Park on Georgia Hwy. 212.
