The Senate has urged the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs in conjunction with other relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies to develop strategic framework for the promotion of the establishment and development of cottage industries in all the 774 LGAs of the country.
The call was made on Tuesday after the Upper Chamber considered a motion on the need to create job opportunities, reduce poverty and rural-urban drift.
Sponsor of the motion, Senator Degi-Eremienyo, W. Biobarakuma (APC – Bayelsa East), in his presentation, noted the dearth of cottage industries in rural communities and the critical role it plays in the provision of large employment opportunities.

The Federal Government has flag off the Extended Special Public Works Programme 774000 Jobs in Gombe State.
About 11,000 young Nigerians across the eleven local government areas in Gombe state will benefit from the project.
The shortlisted candidates who are billed to receive the sum of N20,000 for three months, are expected to be engaged in community service including maintenance of drainages and roads, as well as irrigation work in their locality.
Speaking during the programme launching in Gombe on Friday, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami said the N20, 000 stipends are just to encourage the youths restore community service being voluntarily observed in recent years.

The implementation of the gigantic pilot project programme, which would be coordinated by constituted state committees, is to cost N46.44 billion. It is actually N52 billion, if the costs of administration and logistics are added. And already, the funds were appropriated in the 2020 budget.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment, through its parastatal, the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), is leading the implementation for the recruitment of the beneficiaries and executing its mandate which is slated to last for three months.
The federal government had on July 7, 2020, announced the commencement of the programme.
But immediately, misunderstandings erupted between the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the National Assembly regarding the implementing body.
Kogi communityThe Special Public Works Programme is part of conscious strategies by the Federal Government to address the rising unemployment and insecurity in some parts of the country.
While kicking off the programme in Birnin-Kebbi at the weekend, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, maintained that the employment opportunity to 774,00 Nigerians as part of strategies to fast-track the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) 2017 to 2020. x
The Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Office of the AGF, made this known to The Guardian.
Malami said the objective was to facilitate the creation of productive and inclusive societies in the country and shield the most vulnerable from passive hunger, poverty, environmental degradation and joblessness.
