Andrew Cuomo announced that the curfew on bars and restaurants would be lifted in late-May, the state legislature repealed a major order issued during the pandemic. The state Senate and Assembly unanimously voted to end the executive order that required food to be sold with alcoholic beverages at bars and restaurants. The executive order was issued in July 2020, as an effort to prevent people from gathering at bars and restaurants last year. Now, as vaccinations increase- many of the pandemic restrictions are easing.

The proposed bill, which is now headed for Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s desk, would make permanent and automatic a three-year-old practice that restored voting rights to parolees using an approval process, according to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie’s office. If Cuomo signs the bill, anyone leaving prison would automatically be able to vote again in New York, according to the Let NY Vote Coalition, a group that promotes wider access to voting in the state.

Lawmakers and advocates on Thursday held a virtual rally pushing for the NY HERO Act, which would require businesses have enforceable standards to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “We know for a fact there were more deaths than there should have been in the spring of last year,” Senate Deputy Majority Leader Mike Gianaris said. “Because too many employers were not being scrupulous about protecting their workers and having standards in place.”
