The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday has always been about bringing people together â to commemorate Dr. King, to give back to the community, and to dream. Cruelly, COVID-19 distancing thwarts most attempts at these very things.Â
But the organizers of the Madison Community Meal in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., were determined to bring people together in the time-honored tradition of sharing a meal. The event, new this year, is a collaboration between Overture Center and Madisonâs Central Business Improvement District, but largely conceived by chef Dave Heide of Lilianaâs and Little Johnâs Kitchens.
The gift Jacquelyn Hunt received this year won t fit under any Christmas tree.
Schoepp Motors surprised Hunt with a van on Thursday morning, which she immediately used to help another family in need.
Hunt s previous vehicle was totaled after she slid off the road during a recent bout of bad weather. The Boys & Girls Club of Dane County heard Hunt was in the search for a new set of wheels and wanted to help someone who has made it her mission to help others, according to club chairwoman emeritus Jenny Meicher Santek. Sheâs used to being the giver and sheâs not used to be on the receiving end of things, Meicher Santek said.

MADISON, Wis. Leave it to the community to raise one Dane County senior up this holiday season after a series of tragedies nearly broke her spirit.
To bring Irene Alexander a bit of comfort and joy, a team of a hundred plus laborers are working around the clock to complete renovations on the senior s east side bungalow. I try to keep from crying, but the tears may flow, Alexander said sitting in the Concourse Hotel where she is staying complimentary until the home remodel is finished this Friday.
The great-grandmother s 2020 was beyond difficult. I was so saddened, so down-hearted, she said. The senior lost her brother-in-law, nephew, her husband and her great-granddaughter Anisa Scott to gun violence.
