Clergy Group Alleges Excessive Force Against Sheriff s Office; Sheriff Hammond Responds Wednesday, February 17, 2021
Chattanooga Clergy and community members said they were demanding the Sheriff s Office release a public report detailing training standards and more surrounding policies of excessive force. They said they wanted this report to be sent out by March 12 at the latest.
Sheriff Jim Hammond on Wednesday replied to the group. The sheriff s office recently took over operation of the Silverdale Detention Center and has made a number of sweeps at the facility seeking contraband and weapons. A number of shanks have been found.
In a press release sent out on Sunday afternoon, the Chattanooga Clergy for Justice said:

Five inmates at the Silverdale Detention Center have been charged with attempted first-degree murder in an attack on a fellow prisoner that left him with 73 stab wounds.
The incident happened last Oct. 5 and the victim at first declined to cooperate with investigators. The Sheriff s Office said he has now made positive identifications.
Charged are Dedrick Lamont Lindsey, Jr., 26; James Costlow, 32; Maurice Thurman, Patrick Watts, 19, and Tracy Freeman, 51.
They are also charged with criminal conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, especially aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon in a penal institution, and aggravated riot.

Deed Carroll Dies From Injuries In Nov. 19 Shooting; Charge Upgraded To Murder Against Markious Sims Tuesday, December 22, 2020

Chattanooga Police Homicide Investigators were notified that Deed Carroll, the victim in the Nov. 19, shooting that occurred at 1900 Maple Hills Way, has succumbed to his injuries.
The notification was made by the Hamilton County Medical Examiner s Office.
The suspect, 24-year-old Markious Sims, is now charged with criminal homicide instead of attempted criminal homicide. Sims is already in custody at the Silverdale Detention Center. Police earlier said the victim was on life support with no brain function.
The victim s girlfriend told police that he was off his meds and believed she was sleeping with the neighbor s boyfriend.
