City to expand access to West Seattle low bridge for certain groups Alfred Charles, KOMONews.com Executive Producer © Provided by KOMO-TV Seattle The Seattle Department of Transportation announced Thursday that it will ease restrictions on motorists traveling on the Spokane Street Swing Bridge and allow certain groups, including health care workers, those in need of lifesaving medical care and area restaurant and retail workers, to more freely use the low bridge. The agency also plans to modify restricted hours on the lower span in order to provide three additional hours for weekend travel on the low bridge. Starting April 10, anyone can use the low bridge from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. during the weekend but weekday restrictions will remain the same, the department said.

Ever since the West Seattle Bridge was closed for safety, the only direct route out of West Seattle has been the Lower Spokane Street Bridge. During that time, though, it’s use has been restricted to only allow fast trips for emergency vehicles, transit, and freight. During the more than year-long closure of the West Seattle Bridge, the city has also allowed small groups of users access to the low bridge, primarily Port of Seattle workers and businesses who needed to make unexpected runs out of the community.

Brooklyn Avenue will open to traffic and pedestrians today, while NE 43rd Street is opening today to pedestrian traffic. “The street openings are yet another sign of how close we are getting to the opening of the Northgate Link extension,” said Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff. “Sound Transit thanks the businesses and residents of the area for their patience in spite of all the inconveniences during construction. We are confident that they will soon see that it was all worth it.”
