A costly project July 15, 2021 This refers to the news report ‘ML-1 from Karachi to Peshawar: Project will be part of JCC meeting’s agenda’ (July 13). The ML-1 project which was launched under the umbrella of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) remains stalled owing to differences over cost estimation between the two countries. One believes that even the current projected cost of $7.2 billion by Pakistan’s finance team is exceptionally high and the project requires revisiting. The problems that have marred Pakistan Railways include deteriorated tracks, outdated signalling system, unmanned crossings and the absence of protective fencing. There is certainly no need to build a state-of-the-art railway system such as one which exists in China, Japan or in Western countries.
