The Taleban’s lightning-fast advance to control more territory in Afghanistan is raising alarms from Russia to China, as US President Joe Biden’s move to withdraw troops disrupts a balance of power in South Asia that has held steady for about two decades.
At least 1,000 Afghan troops this week retreated into Tajikistan, prompting the country mobilise an extra 20,000 soldiers to guard its frontier. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s sought out assurances from the Taleban that it will respect the borders of Central Asian states that once were part of the Soviet Union, while neighbouring Pakistan has said it won’t open its borders to refugees.

A very important meeting took place in Moscow last week, virtually hush-hush. Nikolai Patrushev, secretary of the Russian Security Council, received Hamdullah Mohib, Afghanistan’s national security adviser.
There were no substantial leaks. A bland statement pointed to the obvious: They “focused on the security situation in Afghanistan during the pullout of Western military contingencies and the escalation of the military-political situation in the northern part of the country.”

ISLAMABAD: Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal has said there are about 1273 references under trial in accountability courts currently and their approximately worth is Rs1300 billion.
In a statement issued on Sunday, he said NAB was committed to bringing the corrupt elements to justice. NAB has no affiliation with any political party, group and individual and the NAB officials have been directed to perform their duties in accordance with the law, as eradication of corruption is their national duty.”
He said NAB had conducted probe into 56 public limited companies, offshore companies, fake accounts, money laundering and misuse of authority, assets beyond known sources of income and cheating the public at large in illegal housing/ cooperative societies and modaraba scams etc. He said plea bargains were deemed convictions, which were approved by the accountability courts.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has approved the new Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) template whereby any dispute will now be remedied through local arbitration, disclosed Board of Investment (BoI) Secretary Fareena Mazhar while talking to a group of journalists on Sunday.
Ms Mazhar said the government had been facing difficulties in finalising investment treaties with some countries due to the Reko Diq case.
She said the new BIT template has been developed in consultation with all the stakeholders and with the active assistance of law and justice division and the attorney general of Pakistan.
