As the World Bank and IMF seek to put the world economy on a more stable footing and promote sustainable growth, there is one issue they cannot ignore: China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). China’s massive global infrastructure program has increased debt levels to a worrying extent in many developing countries, threatening to hinder their economic recovery. The Bretton Woods institutions need to confront this issue head-on, rather than sweeping it under the rug. BRI meets significant development needs, by funding and building physical and digital infrastructure projects around the world. That is the good news. The bad news, as our recent Council on Foreign Relations Independent Task Force points out, is that BRI also contributes to economic instability. The CPEC was touted as a game-changer for the deteriorating Pakistan’s economy in 2015. However, it has continued to sink under huge debt trap in recent years. Pakistani ambassador to China Moin ul Haque said that he attaches great importance to the profound friendship between China and Pakistan. The construction of Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP) is booming. He is very optimistic about the cooperation between Pakistani cities and Hainan in the fields of port and shipping, education, and agriculture. In an interview with Sansha Satellite TV, Haque said Gwadar port and Yangpu free trade port can have a sister city relationship. Gwadar Port is an important hub of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which connects China s western region and the Arabian Sea. While Yangpu Port is an important hub for the construction of Hainan FTP and a node for integration into the new western land-sea corridor. Haque said that Pakistan and Hainan have great potential for cooperation in the field of port and shipping.
