Woman, 84, gravely injured in SR-163 off-ramp crash; SDPD investigating possible hit and run

BALBOA PARK    An 84-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries Thursday afternoon in a crash in Balboa Park that police are investigating as a possible hit and run, an officer said. The crash occurred just before 1 p.m. when the woman’s 2018 Honda HRV crashed into a guardrail and then a retaining wall on the long, winding Quince Drive off-ramp from north state Route 163, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims. A crash that gravely injured an 84-year-old driver Thursday left the guardrail on Quince Drive badly damaged. (Courtesy of David Peery) Medics took the woman to a hospital for “several serious injuries” that are considered life-threatening, Heims said.

The woman had just exited northbound state Route 163 onto Quince Drive when her 2018 Honda HR-V veered out of control and struck a guardrail near Sixth Avenue shortly before 2:30 p.m., according to San Diego police. Paramedics took her to a hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Due to unexplained damage to the rear of the octogenarian s vehicle, investigators believe another driver may have been involved in a collision with the Honda and fled prior to the arrival of emergency personnel, Officer Robert Heims said.

It happened on Thursday at Bryan Animal Clinic on Stratford Road SE. Decatur police determined multiple animal medications were stolen. Later the same day, police responded to a call about a person unlawfully entering a home on Quince Drive SE in Decatur, where the suspect reportedly took keys from inside and stole a vehicle. Police identified the suspect as 28-year-old William James Bryan II. He was arrested and charged with burglary in the second degree, theft in the first degree, burglary in the third degree and three counts of theft in the second degree.
