NEWS 5 24 21: NE Drops Federal C-19 Benefits, Senate Race Update, Pool Schedule, & Library Return

0:48 Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts announced during his last news COVID-19 news conference he signed an executive order suspending all previous executive orders issued during the pandemic. The Governor is also ending the states participation in the $300 federal COVID-19 benefits, due to the low number of unemployed Nebraskans. The program ends on June 19th. Nebraska is tied for the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 2.8%, along with South Dakota and a few other states. Iowa plans to end federal benefits on June 13th and South Dakota on June 26th. The Iowa Department of Public Health reported no new deaths due to complications of COVID-19. There were only 55 new cases with one in Woodbury County. Currently there are no patients being treated solely for the illness in Sioux City.

SPM NEWS 5.6.21 The Iowa Department of Public Health added two more deaths due to complications in a 24-hours period and more than 700 new cases with 15 in Woodbury County and a positivity rate of 3.8%, slightly below the statewide average. Meanwhile, health officials in Winnebago, Nebraska continue to report high numbers of vaccinated tribal members. Currently, 70% have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. That rate does not include a clinic that took place yesterday. The Executive Director of Siouxland District Health says as of yesterday morning 32% of county residents have received both doses of the vaccine. The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in South Dakota has fallen substantially. The Department of health says 90 patients are getting treatment, down a dozen from the day before.

I am tremendously proud of our community for protecting each other and those beyond The Cliff. We have kept our positive COVID rates low, for which we are all grateful. With these low rates, wide accessibility to COVID vaccinations, many of our community being fully vaccinated, and the reduction in our campus population with the commencement of summer, Briar Cliff University will be moving to a  probationary green operational status beginning today, May 10. This update applies to protocols on Briar Cliff University’s campus as follows:
