Cleveland investigators weren’t able to determine the identity of this young Black man whose life met such a gruesome end in August 1969, though they thought his death might have been tied to the Black Panthers or Black nationalist movement.
The Porchlight Project, an Akron group that tries to shine new light on cold cases, has taken on this case as its next mystery.
“This is a piece of Cleveland history that remains untold,” said James Renner, the Akron author who heads the Porchlight Project. “We’re excited to provide the means to finally give a name to this man so that we can learn how he came to be here and who may have wanted him dead.”

Cleveland, OH - Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley announced that a grand jury has returned an indictment charging Selena Colon, 23, for a drunk-driving crash that killed two 19-year-olds in Lakewood last month.
“Ms. Colon was drunk-driving over 90 mph in a 35 mph zone. This resulted in the death of two wonderful friends and their families left in total anguish,” said Prosecutor O’Malley. “She will be held accountable.”
On February 21, 2021, Colon was driving eastbound on Clifton Avenue when she crashed into the victims’ car as they were turning westbound onto Clifton from Fry Avenue. Lakewood Police and Emergency Medical Services, along with the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office and Ohio State Highway Patrol, responded to the scene and processed it for evidence. CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - A young child died during an apartment fire in Garfield Heights on Sunday night.
Kamari Maddox, 3, died at the scene of the fire, which occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday at an apartment complex in the 4600 block of East 131st Street near Forestdale Drive in Garfield Heights, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.
When firefighters got there, flames were tearing through the second floor. Heavy smoke and fire were coming from a unit on the second floor.

YOUNGSTOWN The Mahoning County Coroner’s Office has identified the first of three men shot to death on the South Side as Thomas Williams, 34.
The separate shootings happened Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
Williams was found dead in the 3200 block of South Avenue. An autopsy was conducted by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Police were called to the area at 11:54 p.m. Thursday by a ShotSpotter notification. ShotSpotter notifies police of gunfire on the South Side.
Officers found Williams in a parking lot. They also learned that a second gunshot victim showed up at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital with non-life-threatening wounds.n
