IWU members at ESB Networks return to work after strike

Industry and Employment Correspondent ESB Networks technicians belonging to the Independent Workers Union have returned to work following a two-day strike but are resuming a work-to-rule and overtime ban. Following a meeting of the IWU strike committee last night, no further strike days have been scheduled for the moment. However, it is understood the union is taking legal advice on how best to pursue its dispute, which members say centres on the refusal of the company to consult adequately with them on the outsourcing of certain work. The company said the impact on customers from the industrial action had been low and outages were being restored in line with business as usual .

More than 7 in 10 private hire drivers have been assaulted at work, research reveals

MORE than seven in 10 private hire drivers have been assaulted at work, new research has revealed. A survey of members of the United Private Hire Drivers (UPHD) union shows that a shocking 71 per cent have been attacked by customers and 82 per cent have suffered verbal abuse. Drivers represented by UPHD, a branch of the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB), protested outside the London offices of app-based taxi firm Bolt on Tuesday after the fatal stabbing of driver Gabriel Bringye in February. Fellow Bolt worker Muhammad Alam was assaulted and had his car stolen at knifepoint the following month.
