Gary Lineker has become the latest high-profile broadcaster to be targeted by HM Revenues and Customs (HMRC) over his tax affairs, a tribunal has heard.
The Match Of The Day host was told by the taxman that he should have been classed as an employee of the BBC and BT Sport for his presenting duties, rather than as a freelancer.
HMRC is now pursuing him for £4.9 million that it claimed should have been paid on income received between 2013 and 2018.
Gary Lineker should be an ’employee’, according to HMRC (Ian Walton/PA)
But Lineker insists all taxes were paid on the income via a partnership set up in 2012 with his ex-wife Danielle Bux and is appealing against the demand.

On the Budget as a whole
Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) national chairman Mike Cherry, said: “This Budget will help many small firms with their final push through to September, but there is little here to aid job creation or help people return to work. Ensuring the newly self-employed can now access support marks a big step forward – we’re pleased our campaign has been heard – but directors, who appear to have been left out yet again, will be incredibly disappointed.”
“There’s much to welcome in this Budget for business communities across the UK. The Chancellor has listened and acted on our calls for immediate support to help struggling businesses reach the finish line of this gruelling marathon and to begin their recovery. Extensions to furlough, business rates relief and VAT reductions give firms a fighting chance not only to restart, but also to rebuild.”

Representatives of small businesses and the accountancy profession say a report on Making Tax Digital for VAT shows that HMRC should provide additional support and allow businesses extra time to get it right when the next phase of the programme is rolled out. Some have also criticised the small sample size and lack of data, and question whether the report vindicates HMRC’s claim that the benefits of MTD outweigh the costs.
, prepared by consultancy Kantar Public, is qualitative research based on interviews with 31 small businesses who participated in the first phase of MTD introduction. It breaks them down into four groups ranging from those for whom costs outweigh benefits, to those where ‘clear and substantial’ benefits were recognised; but it doesn’t say how many businesses fit into each category.
