THE National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) approved the solid waste management plans (SWMPs) of 22 local government units (LGUs) in May, bringing up its nationwide total of approved plans to 1,082 or 63% of the target, according to a statement from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu chairs the NSWMC.
In its statement Tuesday, the DENR said the approvals include four SWMPs in Misamis Oriental, three in Camarines Sur and two each in Misamis Occidental, Ilocos Norte, Benguet, and Lanao del Norte.
The departmentâs environmental management bureau reports that 558 SWMPs are being evaluated, with 332 deemed âalmost completed,â requiring only some additional data relating to budget requirements and specifics on disposal facilities.

Gov t opens central material recovery facility in Marawi

MARAWI CITY, May 24(PIA) As part of the solid waste management project of the government in this city, Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) opened the central material recovery facility.
Constructed within 2.2 hectares and located in Brgy. Malimono (Dulay), the facility is designed to receive, sort, process and store recyclable or compostable materials. This will cater loads of recyclable wastes from all barangays in the City.
DENR Environmental Management Bureau Region 10 focal person Abbas Lao said that the primary purpose of the facility is to enhance and maximize waste diversion from final disposal facility to available market for recycling material for reprocessing as mandated under RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
