Huge mine pits would meet rehabilitation goals : Minister

Premium Content Subscriber only Large mine pits left on the Isaac River flood plain after the shut down of a Central Queensland mine “would meet rehabilitation goals”, Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon says. Greens Maiwar MP Michael Berkman submitted a Queensland parliament Question on Notice to Ms Scanlon asking how the approval of the Pembroke Resources Olive Downs mine met the Department of Environment and Science’s expectations and best practice environmental management. Last month, the Daily Mercury reported RTI documents revealed the department repeatedly flagged concerns with the then Co-ordinator-General during the mine’s environmental approval process in 2018 and 2019 about the serious risks of leaving large mine pits — also known as “voids” — on the Isaac River flood plain after the mine shuts down.

Crowe bill would require public notice before razing power plant

Crowe bill would require public notice before razing power plant The Telegraph FacebookTwitterEmail Crowe SPRINGFIELD State Sen. Rachelle Crowe, D-Glen Carbon, has advanced an initiative requiring property owners to notify communities of demolition plans across the state. “It’s concerning to hear blasts within your community without a warning,” Crowe said. “To prevent residents from being caught off guard and aware of potential health concerns, this measure seeks to require plans for power plant demolitions to be made public.” Crowe said earlier this year residents of East Alton were alarmed when explosions were heard from the decommissioned Wood River Power Station without warning. The initiative amends the Environmental Protection Act by requiring the owner of a coal power plant to notify both the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and populations within 25 miles of the site at least 60 days before commencing a demolition.
