STUDENTS aspiring to work in the public sector must strive to obtain the right paper qualifications to secure government jobs at officer levels for decent salaries and benefits. Their academic qualifications would also determine how far they could advance in their civil service careers.
Qualifications are also a must for licensed professions such as accountants, architects, doctors, engineers and lawyers, in both private and public sectors.
In 2019, the civil service was bloated with 1.71 million government employees and efforts have been made to trim the excess fat.
Hence, it would be a grave mistake for jobseekers to rely on the public sector for employment, although government jobs do provide security of tenure, and now made even more important by this pandemic, with huge numbers in the private sector out of jobs or incomes reduced.
It pays to be streetwise
THOSE who live in or regularly pass by rough neighbourhoods often encounter challenging or dangerous situations.
They learn to be streetwise by acquiring the right attitude, skills and instincts to navigate safely, always mindful not to attract unwanted attention or incite hostility.
They opt for safer routes and make a quick exit the moment they sense trouble is brewing. They sit, stand and walk confidently to show they are no easy prey so as to ward off predators.
They stay alert and are aware of the hazards and people nearby, and those observing from a distance.

Recently, a motorcycle crashed into a car at Pasir Gudang in Johor. The motorcyclist suffered severe injuries to her head, legs and hands, while the car driver was not injured in the collision.
But later, the 18-year-old driver sustained multiple injuries to his head, cheekbones and right leg, and his nose and fingers were broken after being attacked by a mob that assumed he had crashed into the 38-year-old woman motorcyclist.
The police have opened an investigation paper under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting and using dangerous weapons to cause injuries. A 61-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the assault and three more assailants are being sought.
Training seminars must be fun and beneficial
ALTHOUG
H costs of university education range from a few thousand ringgit to hundreds of thousand, few working adults would pay a few hundred ringgit for training that could boost their careers or change their lives for the better.
Sadly, the learning culture is poor in our country. In seminars opened to the public, participants are usually sent by their organisations, and the participants are happy with welcome breaks from routine work. Few make full use of the opportunity to learn and perform much better.
This is evident when they make no effort to prepare questions or raise issues for trainers to answer or expound. During training, many remain silent as most are too shy to ask or answer questions, afraid that others might think their questions are silly or their answers are wrong.
