Many tourism employers around New Zealand and their highly valued employees on work visas will be delighted and relieved by today’s announcement extending Essential Skills Visas.
Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi has announced that two-year Essential Skills visas are available from Monday. For someone already in a fulltime role and wishing to stay with that employer, the application process will be greatly simplified. A work visa holder can also move to a new employer, if a Labour Market test shows there are no suitable New Zealanders available for that role.

The support was first announced in May as part of the government s $200 million tourism support, recovery and re-set plan.
Today Tourism Minister Stuart Nash said the agreements were in place with district health boards to deliver the crucial support to regional communities.
They include Kaikōura, Mackenzie District, Queenstown Lakes, Fiordland and Westland. The DHBs will provide a range of mental well-being services and initiatives at a local level. They will work with communities to decide what s needed and how it s delivered, Nash said. Businesses, workers and their families in our tourism destinations are facing challenges from border closures designed to keep New Zealand safe. The support in the Tourism Communities Plan allows decisions about wellbeing resources and services to be made by those at the heart of the communities themselves.
Otto sent a survey around Napier schools and got more than 1000 responses. Eighty-two per cent thought the council should keep the aquarium open. She said that showed overwhelming support. I thought that was really great to see, she said.

Amelia Otto, 16, got the thoughts of 1,000 people, mostly high-school students in a survey on the possible closure of the National Aquarium in Napier.

The council is considering its closure, after the government denied it funds for a huge redevelopment.
Amelia Otto, 16, feared the animals - such as turtles, penguins, fish and even kiwi will be abandoned with nowhere to go. It s a great, great asset, really valuable, she said, so many people love it and it would be such a loss.
