Hoping for return of visitors

Social Share Tourism officials remain optimistic about the prospects of rebuilding the industry, despite the obstacles posed by the eruption of La Soufriere volcano and the latest travel advisory issued by the United States. Chief executive officer of the Barbados Hotel & Tourism Association (BHTA), Senator Rudy Grant, and Minister of Tourism Senator Lisa Cummins have both said the focus would continue to be placed on the planning for the rebounding of the industry. In the case of the volcanic eruption, Grant said despite the ash, the majority of hotels were still operating, even if with “significantly reduced numbers”. He said hotel occupancy had declined by 18 per cent. (GC)

BHTA confident of recovery, despite gloomy figures

Social Share Barbados’ long-stay visitor arrivals plummeted to 93 per cent but tourism officials remain optimistic the industry will rebound. Chief executive officer of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA), Senator Rudy Grant, painted a gloomy picture of the current situation in a media conference on Thursday, revealing that hotel occupancy had fallen as low as six per cent in January. The BHTA executive attributed the dramatic drop in numbers to several factors associated with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, but he said based on reports from tour operators and other travel industry representatives in Barbados’ main source markets, the desire for travel to Barbados was still high.
