Alcon shares plunged 5.8% despite posting earnings per share of 17¢ on sales of $1.9 billion for the three months ended March 31, 2021, registering revenue growth of 4.8% year-over-year.

The benchmark SMI ended down with a loss of 148.07 points or 1.33% at 10,970.93, slightly off the day s low of 10,959.78. The index advanced to a high of 11,144.83 in opening trades but lost momentum within the next few minutes. Adecco shares ended more than 5% down after the company, which posted a profit in the first quarter, cautioned that COVID-19 related uncertainties remain elevated.

The benchmark SMI ended stronger by 96.66 points or 0.88% at 11,119.00. The index rose to a high of 11,148.06 around mid morning, and despite paring some gains before noon, recovered well and stayed firm right till the end of the session. Lonza Group gained about 1.6%. Swiss Re, Partners Group, Roche Holding and Richemont firmed up by 1.3 to 1.4%. Zurich Insurance Group, Swatch Group, ABB, Alcon, LafargeHolcim, Credit Suisse and Geberit gained 0.8 to 1.1%.

Swiss Market Fails To Hold Gains, Ends Modestly Lower BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) - After opening modestly higher and staying in positive territory till nearly a couple of hours past noon on Thursday, the Switzerland stock market slipped into the red and eventually ended the session on a weak note. The benchmark SMI, which advanced to 11,162.20, ended the day with a loss of 23.95 points or 0.22% at 11,079.51, after drifting to a low of 11,162.20. Swiss Re declined 1.55%, Geberit shed 1.25% and Novartis ended lower by 1.05%. Swiss Life Holding, Swatch Group, ABB, Credit Suisse and Roche Holding lost 0.8 to 1%. Swisscom shares rallied 4.35% after the company said net profit for the quarter rose to 638 million Swiss francs ($701.6 million) from CHF395 million in the first quarter of 2020. Net revenue for the period climbed to CHF2.80 billion from CHF2.74 billion.

Investors, digesting earnings announcements, were looking ahead to the Federal Reserve s monetary policy announcement, due later in the day. The benchmark SMI ended with a small gain of 11.38 points or 0.1% at 11,103.46, after moving in a narrow range between 11,070.72 and 11,126.69. Swatch Group moved up 2.2%, Credit Suisse advanced by about 2% and UBS Group gained 1.88%. Swiss Life Holding ended 1.3% up. Swiss Re, LafargeHolcim, Zurich Insurance Group, ABB and Richemont closed modestly higher.
