Sustainability and Circular Economy

About this event The University of Newcastle, Australia (Singapore) invites you to join the webinar on Sustainability and Circular Economy. Date: 27 May 2021, Thursday Time: 6pm to 7pm (SGT) In this webinar, we will be joined by environmental expert alumnus Professor Seeram Ramakrishna (National University of Singapore) who will discuss all things sustainability, the circular economy, and how the Singapore Green Plan 2030 will advance Singapore’s national agenda on sustainable development. The circular economy advocates keeping products, components, and materials at their highest utility and value at all times and is estimated to give a global benefit of $2 trillion. The demand for a shift to the circular economy is increasing among businesses and the economic rationale for moving towards a circular economy is strong as it increases the resilience of value chains and secures supply stability. Land-starved Singapore explores novel ideas in clean energy push

SHARE Singapore is betting on floating solar farms and vertical panels to increase its clean-energy supplies and cut carbon emissions, a model that could work in other densely populated cities, urban experts said. With renewable energy options such as wind, hydro, nuclear and biomass ruled out, solar photovoltaic (PV) is the most viable option for Singapore, despite limited land for large-scale farms, and challenges such as frequent cloud cover. Last month, Singapore inaugurated a 5 megawatt (MW) offshore floating PV system on the Johor Strait, part of its goal to install at least 2 gigawatt of solar power by 2030 – five times current capacity – and halving its carbon emissions by 2050.
