Press Release
Sen. Panfilo M. Lacson on Sunday hailed Malacañang and the defense establishment for upholding the rule of law in naming a new commanding general for the Philippine Army.
Lacson, who chairs the Senate Committee on National Defense and Security, Peace, Unification and Reconciliation, and is Vice Chairman of the Committee on National Defense of the Commission on Appointments, said the appointment of Maj. Gen. Andres Centino to replace Lt. Gen. Jose Faustino Jr. complies with Section 4 of Republic Act 8186.
Lacson first raised the issue last March at the Commission on Appointments, when he noted Faustino was designated Army chief in February. Faustino is to retire upon reaching the retirement age of 56 in November.

While President Rodrigo Duterte may consider his statements about the West Philippine Sea issue during the May 2016 elections a joke, Senator Panfilo Lacson said such pronouncements are no laughing matter.
Duterte, on Monday night, admitted that his promise to ride a jet ski to Spratly Island, one of the maritime territories being claimed by China, as just a “pure campaign joke.”
Lacson, in an ANC Headstart interview on Tuesday, May 11 said he views Duterte’s latest pronouncements as problematic.
“It’s very hard to read his mind. He may be sending mixed signals such that we don’t know if he’s serious or joking. His spokesperson would say he is joking, but there are times he seems serious in his statements. We don’t know anymore. We have a very big problem in our hand,” Lacson said.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i on Friday, May 7 told the Senate Committee on National Security that Meru Senator Mithika Linturi was arrested on April 28 over fraud, forgery and personation allegations.
The minister claimed the said-offences were committed between June and November 2018.
Matiang’i appeared before the lawmakers to explain the brief detention of Linturi on April 28, when the Senate was debating on the Constitution of Kenya Amendment Bill (2020).
On the said-date, the House adjourned twice demanding Linturi’s release. It was Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot who alerted other legislators that their Meru colleague was not in the chambers after being apprehended.
Lacson: No Way Can NTF-ELCAC Abuse Funds for NPA-Cleared Barangays
Some P9.699 billion has been released so far for the development of barangays that have been cleared of the influence of the New People s Army (NPA), but this - or the full P16.4-billion allocation for 2021 - cannot be abused by the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), Sen. Panfilo M. Lacson said.
Lacson gave this assurance to fellow lawmakers who are asking to defund NTF-ELCAC, even as he stressed the amount would eventually be released to the local government units that will implement the development projects.
