Sen Sgt at Arms: Cyber attack more serious than 2nd Jan 6 event

Senate sergeant-at-arms: Political rhetoric drove increase in threats against lawmakers in 2020

© Greg Nash Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Karen Gibson said during an interview with CNN aired on Sunday that political rhetoric is a key driver behind the rise in anger towards political figures that drove an uptick in threats against lawmakers last year. CNN senior Washington correspondent Pamela Brown asked Gibson if she had seen an uptick in threats against congress members since the Jan. 6 insurrection. Gibson was appointed to sergeant-at-arms after her predecessor Michael C. Stenger resigned in January following the deadly Capitol riot. I would not say since the insurrection, but certainly in 2020 it began to go up considerably and it has remained heightened for a number of members. It is not since January 6, it certainly predated January sixth, Gibson responded.

Senate sergeant at arms says cyberattack more worrisome than repeat of Jan 6 insurrection

And so, cybersecurity for me is a much greater concern than the prospect of thousands of people storming the West Terrace,” Gibson said in an interview that aired on CNN Saturday. “Members have sensitive information that they would not necessarily want to have disclosed that may be in documents. Much of what we do is public. And meant to be so,” Gibson said. “But I would worry about . nation-state actors or others who might try to just really cripple the government s ability to function by locking down cybercommunications networks.”

New Senate report to detail security failures on January 6 but will fuel fight for probe over Trump s role

Getty Images Two Senate committees plan to release a flurry of recommendations in a thorough 100-page-plus report about what went wrong on January 6, but they will stop short of examining former President Donald Trump’s role in the run-up to the attack on the US Capitol, which is likely to fuel the partisan debate about whether further investigation is needed. The Senate Rules and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committees are expected to release their findings on the security failures that led to the January 6 attack on the US Capitol next week, which includes a detailed look at how security failures, poor planning, slow response time from law enforcement and lackluster sharing of intelligence and communications all contributed to the deadly insurrection where the Capitol was breached, according to sources familiar with the effort.
