Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) blocked an attempt by Democrats to either pass or vote on the bill, which passed the House on Monday. The floor drama underscores the increasing likelihood that lawmakers will not be able to pass a bill to boost the stimulus checks before the 116th Congress wraps on Sunday.

Congress caught doing something right | News, Sports, Jobs

WASHINGTON They say the personal is political. The political is also personal. Spending hours under the Capitol dome as Congress negotiated a COVID-19 relief package, I saw personalities break through the hot air. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., literally walked in circles around the rotunda, carrying on a cellphone conversation among the statues. That summed up the mood in the House and Senate chambers. Christmas was coming, with lawmakers stressed and pressed like you and me. Right up to the Monday midnight deadline, they passed an emergency $900 billion bill. At last. Democratic Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer called it a “shot in the arm,” perhaps to link it to the new vaccine. He told me he “defanged” a late move to curb Federal Reserve emergency loans.

The result has been a rapidly shifting realignment in Republican ideology. GOP officials just last week grudgingly signed off on $600 stimulus checks, tailored to meet their demand to keep the cost of a massive pandemic relief package under $1 trillion. Now, many have rushed to support the larger checks, which would add hundreds of billions of dollars to t

Sanders to slow down NDAA veto override in bid to get vote on $2K checks proposal

Sanders announced his plans in a tweet Monday as the House passed legislation to boost the amount of the direct payments included in the $2.3 trillion package signed by Trump on Sunday night.  This week on the Senate floor Mitch McConnell ADVERTISEMENT A spokesman for Sanders confirmed that he will object to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) setting up a vote on the veto override of the defense bill until a proposal to increase the amount of the direct payments to $2,000 is also voted on.  Sanders can t ultimately prevent the Senate from voting on whether to override Trump s veto of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which initially passed the Senate earlier this month in a 84-13 vote, with Sanders voting no at the time.
