As the delta variant surges across the country, the calls for Americans to get vaccinated against COVID-19 are growing louder â and more Republicans are joining in. I would encourage people to get the vaccine. I have high confidence in it. I got it myself, said House Republican Whip Steve Scalise. This is not complicated; 97% of the people who are in the hospital now for COVID are unvaccinated. So if there s anybody out there willing to listen: Get vaccinated, said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell earlier this week.

Why is Gov. Doug Ducey silent about the fact that COVID-19 cases in Arizona are up 113% over the past seven days?
It’s time for him to speak up, and he must do so convincingly. No buts. No excuses.
The highly contagious delta variant of the virus that causes COVID-19 is spreading fast in Arizona and across the nation, mainly among the unvaccinated.
Ducey’s own health guru is now out talking about the surge of new COVID-19 cases in the state, but Arizonans need to hear directly from the governor.
Ducey has been slow to act, but we need him
KHN’s ‘What the Health?’: Delta changes the covid conversation
The resurgence of covid cases in the U.S. largely attributable to the much more contagious delta variant has given policymakers the jitters. The Biden administration is redoubling efforts to get people vaccinated, and even some Republicans who had been silent or skeptical of the vaccines are encouraging the unvaccinated to change their status.
Meanwhile, it s not just covid that s shortening U.S. life expectancy. Nearly 100,000 people died of drug overdoses in 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This week a multibillion-dollar settlement among states, drugmakers and distributors could funnel funding to fight the opioid scourge.

I had not enjoyed the pleasure of meeting the new House Chaplain, retried Rear Adm. Margaret Grun Kibben, until just the other day. This is ironic. I broke the story late last year that Kibben would become the new chaplain - the first female to hold the post. A Presbyterian minister, Kibben is the former Chaplain of the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy.
I had only seen Kibben from the dais in the House chamber when she would offer the opening prayer to start the daily sessions in the House of Representatives. And until a few days ago, I had never seen Kibben without a mask when she offered the invocations. So I wasn’t even sure if I would recognize her in the halls of the Capitol.
