ALBANY The Assembly s impeachment probe against Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has moved swiftly as the law firm conducting the investigation has contacted attorneys for 70 witnesses and requested records from four government agencies.
The investigation, which began in March, is being conducted by the Assembly Judiciary Committee, which hired the Davis Polk & Wardwell law firm to run it. Davis Polk specializes in white-collar criminal cases and several of the top members of the legal team have previously worked as federal prosecutors.
ALBANY â State legislators and officials solemnly celebrated justice, they said Tuesday, following the guilty verdict of Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murder in the death of George Floyd last May.
After deliberating for less than 12 hours, the jury returned its verdict Tuesday on Chauvin, a white former officer who was charged with manslaughter, second-degree murder and third-degree murder in the death of Floyd, a Black man. Chauvin, 45, could be sentenced to 40 years in prison.
âThis guilty verdict says what so many of us have known for a year â George Floyd was murdered by an officer sworn to protect and serve, but this verdict doesnât mean the persistent problem of police misconduct was solved,â U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., posted to Twitter after Tuesdayâs decision. âGeorge Floyd should be alive. We are working for real change.â

On Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that the FY2022 budget continues support for middle-class income tax cuts to help New Yorkers recover from economic hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021, the fourth year of the multi-year tax cuts enacted in 2016, income tax rates have been lowered from 6.09% to 5.97% for taxpayers filing jointly in the $43,000-$161,550 income bracket, and from 6.41% to 6.33% in the $161,550-$323,200 income bracket. Over the first four years of the cuts, 4.8 million New Yorkers saved $6.6 billion, officials say. These tax cuts will provide much-needed relief by putting money back into the pockets of middle-class New Yorkers. There s no doubt that our state will bounce back stronger and better than before, and in the interim, it s critical we support the New Yorkers who helped get us through this crisis and take steps to rebuild an economy that works for all, Cuomo said.
