New York lawmakers are nearing agreement on a $2 billion fund that would provide assistance to jobless workers who were excluded from unemployment benefits during the pandemic, including undocumented immigrants.
As activists hold hunger strikes and march for the excluded workers fund, several suburban lawmakers continue to express concern that the effort goes too far even as legislative leaders and Gov. Andrew Cuomo move toward including it in a final state budget deal this week.
Many undocumented immigrants have not received aid such as stimulus checks or federal unemployment benefits during the pandemic, even though studies show that they pay billions of dollars in taxes each year.
